Guide to Clearing

If you’re in the process of making an application to UWS for 2020 entry, or have already made an application to us, please be aware that UCAS temporarily closes its application system to all universities to enable exam results processing for students in England, Northern Ireland and Wales from 2pm on Friday 7 August until 8am on Thursday 13 August.

Don’t worry though, we’re still working through UWS applications already received, but be aware that your status on UCAS Track won’t show any updates until the system reopens on 13 August. Similarly, if you make a UCAS application to UWS during this period your application will come through to us on 13 August for processing, and Track will be updated as soon as possible after that.

What is Clearing?

Clearing gives you another chance to secure your place at university. You can apply through Clearing if:

  • You’re applying after 30 June to university for the first time for session 2020
  • You’re not holding any offers
  • You didn’t meet the conditions of your offers
  • You achieved better results than expected and want to change your application through Adjustment

Where are you on your clearing journey?

UWS is my firm choice

Check UCAS Track. This will show information on your offer and give you further instructions.

UWS is my insurance choice and I want to come here instead of my firm choice

  • Step 1. Contact us on 0800 027 1000 to confirm we have a place for you
  • Step 2. Contact your firm choice and ask to be released into clearing
  • Step 3. Check UCAS Track for an update on your application status
  • Step 4. Once unconditional at UWS you will receive joining instructions by email

Didn’t get the results you needed? Don’t panic!

  • Step 1. Check UCAS Track to see if the decision status has changed to unconditional. If it has, you will receive joining instructions via email
  • Step 2. If the decision status is still conditional, please contact us on 0800 027 1000. Our admissions team will be working through applications as quickly as possible. Please check UCAS Track for updates
  • Step 3: If your application is unsuccessful as a result of not achieving the grades, you can review the clearing options available to you on our website or via UCAS; you can also look at alternative routes into university including HN study at college as your start point. Contact us to speak with our recruitment team for advice on college articulation routes into UWS.

I did better than expected (adjustment)

If you get better results than you were expecting, and meet and exceed the conditions of your firm choice, you can look for an alternative course using UCAS Adjustment, if you want to.

Adjustment is available from A-Level results day on 13 August until 31 August following the steps below:

  • Step 1. Check UCAS Track to see if you are eligible to enter Adjustment
  • Step 2. Click the ‘find out about and register for adjustment’ link on UCAS
  • Step 3. Contact UWS on 0800 027 1000 to discuss your options with us
  • Step 4. Contact your firm choice and ask to be released into clearing
  • Step 5. Check UCAS Track for an update on your application status – our admissions team need to confirm your place
  • Step 6. You will be sent joining instructions via email

I’m a new applicant

  • Step 1: Contact us on 0800 027 1000 to discuss your options, or check our clearing website for vacancies
  • Step 2: If we have places on your course and you meet the requirements, you can apply through UCAS Track. Check UCAS Track to review the status of our offer
    (If you have not used UCAS to apply to university in 2020, and you only want to apply to UWS you can apply direct to us using our online application system)
  • Step 3: If successful, you will be sent joining instructions via email

  • Tuesday 4 August – 8.30am-6pm 
  • Wednesday 5 August – 8.30am-6pm 
  • Thursday 6 August – 8.30am-6pm 
  • Friday 7th August – 8.30am-6pm 

Opening times will return to 8.45am-4.45pm from Monday 10 August.
