About the course

Prepare for employment in the sports coaching and development industries with UWS’s BA/BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching & Development.

This is the only degree of its kind in Scotland and has been developed in consultation with sports industry partners to provide the knowledge and skills sought after by employers. The applied nature of this degree leaves you well-equipped to work in the promotion and development of sports, or in the teaching and coaching of sport.

Programme Highlights

  • Placement learning is a key feature of this course to develop practical skills relevant to the modern sports coaching and development industries. Students have undertaken placements with a wide range of sports coaching and development organisations in Ayrshire and beyond

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Scottish Highers: BCC (69 UCAS Tariff points) including 1 science or PE 
  • A levels: DDD (72 UCAS Tariff points) including 1 science or PE
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: H3 H3 H3 including 1 science or PE
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 27 points (3 @ Higher Level)
  • Scottish Wider Access Programme: Access to STEM or Access to Humanities or Access to Life Sciences or Access to Health & Biological Sciences (ABB), all including at least three units at Higher level in PE, English, Science or Maths
  • SQA HNC or BTEC Level 4 HNC: Sports Therapy or Coaching & Developing Sport or Sport Coaching & Development or Fitness, Health & Exercise or Applied Sports Science / Applied Sports & Exercise Science (for SQA awards, all with B in Graded Unit)
  • Scottish Advanced Highers: BCC (128 UCAS Tariff points)
  • A levels: BCC (104 UCAS Tariff points)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 30 points (3 at Higher Level) including Biology
  • SQA HNC / BTEC Level 4 HNC: Applied Sports Science / Applied Sports and Exercise Science or Coaching & Developing Sport or Sport Coaching & Development or Fitness, Health & Exercise or Physical Activity & Health (for SQA awards, must have Grade A in Graded Unit)
  • SQA HND or BTEC Level 5 HND: Sports Therapy† (for SQA awards, must contain Grade B in Graded Unit) or Applied Sports & Exercise Science or Coaching & Developing Sport or Fitness, Health & Exercise or Sport Coaching & Development or Physical Activity & Health (for SQA awards, with CA/CB in Graded Unit (all must have minimum of Grade B in all SCQF Level 8 Graded Units))

† HND Sports Therapy is not eligible for consideration for Year 3 entry
