About the course

UWS’s BSc (Hons) Sport Development will focuses on how to help people lead healthy, active lifestyles.

You’ll learn both about the development of sport and development through sport by exploring sports contributions to health, communities, economies, and societies on global and local scales.

This degree is unique in Scotland and was developed in consultation with partners from national sport organisations and governing bodies, NHS and the third sector, as well as senior sport development officers and expert coaches. These strong links to industry are reflected in course design, work experience opportunities, and employment opportunities available to UWS students.

  • We have excellent links with a number of clubs and organisations, including many SPFL football clubs, Active Schools, and South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture, which provide work-based learning opportunities
  • The degree is delivered at our state-of-the-art Lanarkshire Campus with elements also delivered at the Emirates Arena – a world-class sports facility built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the home of many Scottish governing bodies in sport

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Scottish Highers: BCC (69 UCAS Tariff points) including 1 science or PE
  • A levels: DDD (72 UCAS Tariff points) including 1 science or PE
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: H3 H3 H3 including 1 science or PE
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 27 points (3 @ HL)  including 1 science or Sports, Exercise and Health Science
  • Scottish Wider Access Programme: Access to STEM or Access to Humanities or Access to Life Sciences BBB (and must include PE and Communications 4 & Literature 1 @ SCQF Level 6)
  • SQA HNC or BTEC Level 4 HNC: Coaching & Developing Sport or Sport Coaching & Development or Fitness, Health & Exercise or Applied Sports & Exercise Science or Physical Activity & Health (for SQA awards, with Grade B in Graded Units)
  • Scottish Advanced Highers: BBC (136 UCAS Tariff points) including English and PE
  • A levels: BBC (112 UCAS Tariff points) including English and PE
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 30 points (3 @ Higher Level) including 1 science and Sports, Exercise and Health Science
  • SQA HNC / BTEC Level 4 HNC: Coaching & Developing Sport or Sport Coaching & Development or Fitness, Health & Exercise or Applied Sports Science / Applied Sports & Exercise Science or Physical Activity & Health (for SQA awards, with Grade A in Graded Units)
  • SQA HND or BTEC Level 5 HND: Sports Therapy† (for SQA awards, must contain Grade B in Graded Unit)
  • SQA HND or BTEC Level 5 HND: Applied Sports & Exercise Science; Coaching & Developing Sport; Fitness, Health & Exercise; Sport Coaching & Development; Physical Activity & Health (for SQA awards, with minimum CB in Graded Units – all SCQF Level 8 Graded Units must be at Grade B, or above). NB: for SQA HNDs with 3 Graded Units then the following minimum grade combinations will apply: CAA / CAB / CBB

† HND Sports Therapy is not eligible for consideration for Year 3 entry
