About the course

The BSc (Hons) Applied Environmental Science and Sustainability is ideal if you want to play a part in finding solutions concerned with the combined impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss and unsustainable resource management and their implications the future stability of life support systems on our planet.

As an Environmental Scientists must overcome these challenges through creative, innovative, and more sustainable solutions to local and global challenges. By drawing on a variety of core scientific fields such as Biology, Chemistry and Earth Systems and their underpinning for Policy and Regulation and addressing fundamental principles of Sustainability.

You will gain a grounding in biological and chemical and earth system disciplines to build knowledge and understanding of fundamental environmental systems before progressing to study more specialised and advanced topics, focused on applied environmental governance and sustainability.


  • The BSc (Hons) Environmental and Sustainability allows you to specialise in subjects focused on ecosystem function and understanding human interaction in the environment, such as aquatic ecology, waste and resource management, pollution control and environmental impacts on public health.
  • You will benefit from UWS’s strong history of applied research in environmental sciences over many decades that spans multiple disciples and has global impact.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Scottish Highers: BCC (69 UCAS Tariff points) including Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology
  • A levels: DDD (72 UCAS Tariff points) including Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: H3 H3 H3 including Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 24 points (3 @ HL) including HL Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology
  • Scottish Wider Access Programme: Access to Medicine or Access to Science or Access to Biological & Chemical Science or Access to Chemistry & Biology or Access to Health & Biological Science or Access to Dietetics or Access to Health & Life Sciences or Access to Radiography, all must contain Grades BBB
  • SQA HNC / BTEC Level 4 HNC: Science subject
