About the course

UWS’s BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science will equip you with the skills and experience needed to play a vital role in modern health care provision.

This degree has been developed to provide a pathway to help you become a professional biomedical scientist.

You’ll complete modules in biology, chemistry and statistical analysis – which will underpin your knowledge and understanding – before progressing to study advanced aspects of biomedical science.

Biomedical scientists play an essential role in the identification of diseases and improving the provision of healthcare.

  • This degree is designed to prepare you for a career working at the forefront of modern healthcare, where you’ll play a vital role in the effective diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and prevention of disease.
  • The BSc Biomedical Science has been developed in partnership with the National Health Service and is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science.
  • We have a range of placement opportunities available allowing you to apply your knowledge in a real-world laboratory setting.

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • Scottish Highers: CCC (63 UCAS Tariff points) including Biology or Human Biology 
  • A levels: CC (64 UCAS Tariff points) including Biology or Human Biology
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: H3 H3 H4 including Biology or Human Biology
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 24 points (3 @ HL) including Biology or Human Biology
  • Scottish Wider Access Programme: Access to Science BBB or Access to Medicine BBB or Access to Radiography BBB or Access to Chemical & Life Sciences BBB or Access to Health & Life Sciences BBB or Access to Healthcare & Biological Sciences BBB, all including Biology or Human Biology
  • Scottish Advanced Highers: BBC (136 UCAS Tariff points) including Biology
  • A levels: BBC (120 UCAS Tariff points) including Biology
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 30 points including Higher Level Biology and at least Ordinary Level Chemistry
  • SQA HNC / BTEC Level 4 HNC: Applied Science or Biomedical Science or Applied Biomedical Science or Industrial Biotechnology
  • SQA HND / BTEC Level 5 HND: Biomedical Science or Biological Science or Applied Biological Sciences
