About the course

Study mathematics and get ready to teach the next generation of mathematicians with UWS’s BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Education degree.

This programme will provide you with a broad understanding of key areas of mathematics and statistics, with options to individualise your degree in Years 1 & 3.

Education studies are introduced in Year 3 and you’ll get the chance to apply your knowledge in a professional setting via school experience placements in Year 4.

Graduates are eligible for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and entry to the Teacher Induction Scheme as a secondary school teacher of mathematics.

  • You’ll complete a four-year Honours degree in mathematics together with the teaching qualification required to teach mathematics in secondary schools to an advanced level.
  • Degree content can be individualised, with module options in Year 3 including:
    • Abstract Algebra
    • Complex Analysis
    • Mechanics
    • Numerical Analysis
  • You’ll use industry standard software to develop the practical and communication skills required for working in today’s classrooms.
  • You’ll be taught by research-active academics who are specialists in their field.

*The Mathematics modules are taught at Paisley Campus and the Education modules at Ayr Campus.

Entry Requirements

  • Scottish Highers: CCCC (84 UCAS Tariff points) including Maths plus SQA National 5 English
  • A levels: CC (64 UCAS Tariff points) including Maths plus GCSE English
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: H3 H3 H3 H4 including Maths
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 24 points including Higher Level Maths
  • SQA HNC / BTEC Level 4 HNC: relevant subject (for SQA HNCs must include Engineering Mathematics 1, or equivalent)
  • Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP): Access to STEM
  • Scottish Advanced Highers: CCD (144 UCAS Tariff points), including Maths plus SQA National 5 (Grade C) / Intermediate 2 (Grade C) / Standard Grade (Credit) English
  • A levels: BCC (104 UCAS Tariff points) including Maths plus GSCE English (Grade C, or above)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 28 points including Maths
  • SQA HND/BTEC Level 5 HND: relevant subject (for SQA HNDs must include Engineering Mathematics 2 and Engineering Mathematics 3)
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: DDM
  • Scottish Baccalaureate: Science – considered on an individual basis
Important Information

All applicants should be aware that before progressing to Year 3, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. English at SCQF Level 6 (e.g. SQA Higher English or Higher ESOL), or equivalent
  2. Mathematics at SCQF Level 5 (e.g. SQA National 5 or Internmediate 2 (Grade C, or above) or Standard Grade (Credit), or equivalent
  3. Successful interview with School of Education
  4. Students who are offered the opportunity to progress to Year 3 of this programme must apply for and obtain membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme before enrolment
